From math teacher to ANVA administrator: 'I've found the challenge again'

After twelve years in education as a math teacher, Wybren Nauta (33) decided to change course. With virtually no knowledge of insurance or ANVA software, he passed the traineeship to become an ANVA Administrator last September. "I can still learn a lot here.

When Wybren saw ANVA's paid retraining vacancy, he knew: this is for me. After studying Art and Art Policy, he rolled into teaching at the age of 21. 'Although I really enjoyed doing it, I ended up missing the challenge. Math remains math; there is little growth in it. That's what made the ICT sector so attractive to me.'

Intrinsic motivation

During his studies, Wybren discovered his interest in ICT through a minor in computer science. 'There I learned skills that now come in handy as an automation employee at FGD: digital analytical thinking and problem-solving.' For the traineeship, experience was not required, but motivation was. 'I had that: I traveled from Leeuwarden to Amersfoort five days a week.'

Technology and human contact

For six weeks, Wybren and five other trainees were taught by seasoned ANVA consultants, worked independently on assignments and visited his future employer, where he joined in October. "What I like about my work at FGD is the balance: I don't spend all day writing code. My work is digital, but I also have a lot of contact with people. It's a nice mix of technology and human contact, whereas teaching was purely people work.'

ANVA return days

For Wybren, working with the other trainees was one of the most enjoyable aspects of the traineeship. 'We immediately had a good click and the atmosphere was very nice.' This year, the trainees are still meeting monthly at headquarters during the ANVA return days. 'It's nice to see each other again, exchange practical experiences and ask questions about challenges you run into.'

Everything in place

Where Wybren missed the challenge in teaching, he now feels he has a lot to learn. 'If I had started at FGD without the traineeship, I would have been overwhelmed. Now I can apply everything I learned there - it's really falling into place now.' He doesn't miss teaching for now. 'I feel very much in place here within the team and feel that I have the opportunity to continue to develop.'
